Affecting any area of the body, skin cancer develops from the skin cells. It often stems from ultraviolet light that originates from tanning beds or the sun. Even those of us living in Conway can’t entirely avoid spending time outdoors, every day, week, and month we are exposed to sunlight.

Understanding Skin Cancer

Skin cancer develops on the skin and can present itself on any part of the body. Ultraviolet light originating from the sun or tanning beds is often the primary cause. It’s impossible to avoid the outdoors entirely, so even those of us in Loris are exposed to the sun’s rays daily, weekly, and even monthly.

The great news is nearly all skin cancer lesions respond considerably well to skin cancer treatment, especially when caught and treated in the early stages. Your greatest advantage over skin cancer is early detection. Make an appointment today with Atlantic Dermatology to be screened and protect your skin.

To schedule a skin cancer screening, call our offices at 843-399-9965.

Types of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer begins when healthy skin cells abnormally develop, then quickly multiply and grow out of control in an unusual pattern. When the abnormal skin cells continue to multiply, this can lead to malignant tumors.

Different types of skin cancer lead to different prognosis and as well require different treatment options. Malignant tumors range from common to extremely rare and they each have different qualities.

The 3 common types of skin cancer are:
  • Malignant Melanoma
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma

At Atlantic Dermatology we provide care for every type of skin cancer. If you live in or near the Loris area and are concerned about a skin abnormality, need skin cancer treatment, or require a skin cancer check, contact us.

Malignant Melanoma

The rarest and most dangerous and deadly form of skin cancer is Malignant Melanoma. It will often present itself in an existing mole or can develop as a new mole. Cancerous moles may appear or change suddenly.

The key to effective treatment of malignant melanoma is early skin cancer detection and diagnosis.

If you live in the Loris area and have concerns with unusual or new moles, or noticed any changes in any moles, do not hesitate to call our office to set an appointment.  Reach us at 843-399-99654 or through our online form.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

The most common type of skin cancer is Basal Cell Carcinoma. It generally forms on areas of the skin most often exposed to the sun like the ears, face, neck, scalp, hands and arms.

Basal cell carcinoma is considered a slow growing skin cancer and rarely spreads, or metastasizes, to different areas of the body.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous Cell Carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer. Though this form is usually found on areas of the skin most frequently exposed to the sun, it has been known to occur on less frequently exposed parts of the body as well.

This type of skin cancer is more likely to invade the deeper fatty tissue, and though uncommon, can spread to other areas of the body. If detected early and surgically removed, Squamous Cell Carcinoma is nearly always curable.

Skin Cancer Warning Signs

Skin cancer bumps, spots and lesions don’t always appear in the same manner. They can be scaly or scar-like, flat or raised, dark or light and more.

Some indicators to watch for, however, are moles altering appearance, skin spots that don’t heal or reoccur, and rapidly growing bumps or lumps.

While skin cancer can manifest itself in a variety of manners, particular warning signs should not be overlooked.

  • A recurring sore that bleeds
  • A scaly and/or reddish patch that doesn’t heal
  • A mole that changes in color, size or shape
  • A lump with a central depression that may grow rapidly

Early detection greatly improves prognosis of skin cancer! If you notice any suspicious skin defects, it is imperative to set an appointment as soon as possible.
