Your foremost defense for catching skin cancer early is to be fully aware of skin cancer the warning signs and receive routine skin cancer screenings. At Atlantic Dermatology, we assess your condition, diagnose and identify the best treatment options for:
  • Actinic Keratosis
  • Precancerous Skin Lesions
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma
  • Malignant Melanoma

Precancerous Skin Lesions Treatment

Photodynamic Therapy is the latest advancement in treating Actinic Keratosis and precancerous skin lesions. This is an in-office procedure we offer to our patients which includes a topical medication called levulinic acid.

It’s applied to precancerous skin for a set amount of time, then a blue light is directed to the affected area, aimed at destroying precancerous skin cells,.

The majority of our patients tolerate this procedure very well. The medication application is generally painless. Exposure to the BLU-U Light can cause a slight stinging sensation and skin may appear “sunburned” for 4-7 days post treatment.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treatment
Because it can grow deeply and spread, squamous cell carcinoma is a dangerous form of skin cancer. If caught early and surgically removed, squamous cell carcinoma prognosis is favorable and almost always curable.

But it is heavily dependent on being alert to any changes and abnormalities on your skin.

Squamous cell skin cancer can be found anywhere on the body. The marks can resemble skin cancer bumps with a central depression or cancerous warts.

We implore Loris residents to be alert for these warning signs:

  • A bleeding lump, which may possibly grow rapidly and includes a central depression
  • A scaly, crusty patch that is bleeds and red
  • A scaly and rough growth resembling a wart
  • An open sore, lasting for weeks and bleeds

It is critical to take potential squamous cell skin cancer seriously. If left untreated, it can be deadly.

Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment
The slowest growing form of skin cancer and most common is Basal Cell Carcinoma. It generally appears on the arms, face, hands and other parts of the body most exposed to the sun.

Skin abnormalities to watch for include:
  • A shiny or taut area with a scar like appearance
  • Pearly type lumps ranging from flesh colored to brown
  • A raised area with or without blood vessels
  • A reddish patch, which may itch and will not heal
  • An open sore that bleeds, heals and returns

This Early stage basal cell carcinoma is readily treated. This type of skin cancer rarely results in death and rarely spreads, however, if left untreated, basal cell cancer may invade surrounding tissue. Surgical removal is usually the most advantageous way to treat basal cell carcinoma.

Schedule an appointment for a skin cancer check and to discuss Basal Cell Carcinoma treatment options.

Malignant Melanoma Treatment
Malignant melanoma most often presented as cancerous moles and is the rarest of all the skin cancers. It is also the skin cancer with highest mortality rate, accounting for one death every hour. This is why it is absolutely critical to be continually watchful of new and existing moles.

Be vigilant for these indicators:
  • Bleeding and/or itchy moles
  • A new spot that is dark, may bleed or itch
  • Moles that change in shape, color or size
We cannot stress enough how early detection is absolutely critical in treating malignant melanoma. Melanoma is more common in men overall, but it is also the leading form of cancer in women 25 to 29 years. And is the second most common type of cancer in women and young women 15-29 years of age.

We encourage our Loris residents to come in for a mole check and skin cancer screening.

Skin Cancer Prevention
The first and best step to prevent skin cancer is being sun smart. Always apply sunscreen every two hours covering sensitive areas. Avoid long-term, direct sun exposure between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM.

Even with following this these, always keep in mind a single blistering sunburn can put you at an increased risk for skin cancer.

If you have any concerns about any abnormalities on any area of your skin or if you have noticed any new warts or moles or changes to current ones, reach out to us today to discuss your concerns and to set an appointment.
